What is AdWords Certification:
Google AdWords Certification is a professional accreditation that offers people a chance to prove their knowledge of basic and advanced aspects of AdWords, provided by Google at no monetary cost.
Why do you need this certification or take this assessment?
This is a Globally recognized certification, which gives credibility to your knowledge of Google AdWords. Often Recruiters demand this certification as a prerequisite for Jobs related to digital marketing or AdWords.
On the other hand, I really love taking this test as it is of International standard, with the type of questions present in the assessment it really tests your knowledge and helps you think out of the box.
Where and how can I get certified?
Google AdWords certification and assessment is provided on the new Google platform called “Academy for Ads” previously this was offered on “Google Partners website”.
Academy for Ads is a training programme offered by Google to grow your knowledge and get certified on the Google Advertising tools/ products.
Now, to get started you need to get enrolled or register yourself with Academy for Ads,
From the catalog of courses choose the topic you want to get started with. To start off with Google AdWords certification you need to complete the Google AdWords Fundamentals exam, which covers all the fundamental aspects of AdWords and PPC advertising, to get certified you need to next choose an advanced topic.

- Display Advertising
- Video Advertising
- Shopping Advertising
- Mobile Advertising
In addition to these Google Analytics, certification is also provided on the same website.
I would suggest starting off with search advertising as this is the most prominent in terms of demand and projects in the market, however, continue to learn and finish other modules as well.
This is a timed exam varying from 120 mins to 60 mins with 100 to 70 questions for different modules, make sure you allocate a good day and time without any disturbance to take the test patiently
You would need a minimum of 80% marks to pass the assessment (the pass percentage keeps varying depending the updates rolled out by Google)
Once you successfully clear a combination of “Fundamentals and Advanced” you will be provided with a certificate which is valid for a year from the time you have passed the exam. This is a digital certificate which comes along with a link, you can directly upload this certificate to your LinkedIn profile.
Note: If you are unable to clear the test you will not be allowed to retake it until the next 24 hours.
I would strongly suggest you to keep following new trends and features on AdWords as new updates keep getting added on and this helps you to be in sync with the changes and market needs.
How long would it take to prepare?
Now this question applies to each individuals learning speed and dedication to learn.
I would say a 1-2 hour dedicated reading/preparation for one week would be enough to clear the fundamentals exam and 2-3 weeks of same study time for search and display together to gain quality understanding.
How to pass the assessment?
In my opinion, if the assessment is taken honestly it is challenging and most interesting exam for a fresher or a newbie, as mentioned earlier the assessment does not only test your fundamental knowledge but your understanding on how Adwords works on execution and it’s outcomes. the assessment has a mix of easy to advanced questions with no fixed order (Few advanced questions are case study/scenario based).
So for a complete beginner, I would suggest starting from the scratch and follow these steps:
- Understanding how marketing/online marketing and how advertising works on Google
- Basics and fundamentals of AdWords
- Advanced Topics
